China, Tanzania, and Zambia have signed a pivotal agreement to revitalise the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway. It was originally constructed in the 1970s. This initiative aims to improve East Africa’s rail-sea logistics. It was formalised during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the presidents of Tanzania and Zambia attended too.
In fact, China funded the railway of the 1,860km (1,156-mile) with an interest-free loan. Additionally, Chinese and African workers built it between 1970 and 1975. It provides a crucial transport route for copper and cobalt exports from Zambia’s resource-rich mines to Tanzania’s coastal ports, strengthening regional trade and connectivity.
Renewing a Legacy: The Modernisation of TAZARA
In February, China proposed investing US$1 billion to rehabilitate the railway through a public-private partnership model. This project marks a significant step in reinforcing East Africa’s infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
President Xi Jinping emphasised the importance of the TAZARA revitalisation project. He stated that China aims to use this agreement to bolster high-quality Belt and Road cooperation in Africa. This includes creating an advanced rail-sea intermodal transport network and positioning Tanzania as a model zone for strategic development.
The TAZARA upgrade is expected to enhance cargo transportation efficiency. Eventually, benefiting both local industries and international trade by providing a reliable and cost-effective route to global markets.
