The OCP Group, a global leader in phosphate-based fertilisers, has secured a €200 million loan from the European Bank. For reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to fund key sustainability projects. This partnership signifies a shared commitment to tackling pressing global challenges, including water scarcity and food security. The loan is primarily allocated for the development of two state-of-the-art desalination plants in Jorf Lasfar and Safi, with a combined capacity of 35 million m³ annually. These facilities will reduce OCP’s reliance on freshwater in its industrial operations, showcasing its innovative approach to sustainable water management. Furthermore, the desalination plants will not only serve OCP’s industrial needs but also supply drinking water to nearby communities, addressing critical local water shortages while fostering regional development.
OCP Group’s Ambitious Sustainability Vision
The OCP Group’s sustainability vision extends far beyond water management. With an ambitious investment plan of $14 billion between 2025 and 2027, OCP is prioritising green energy, resource efficiency, and community well-being. In fact, the planned desalination plants are part of broader efforts to integrate cutting-edge technologies into industrial processes, minimising environmental impact and maximising efficiency. This aligns with Morocco’s environmental agenda, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and water security. In addition, OCP’s leadership in sustainability has been previously demonstrated through significant projects like the €100 million solar power initiative funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). These efforts highlight OCP’s role as a global pioneer in sustainable agricultural solutions and industrial practices.
Setting a Global Benchmark in Sustainability
This collaboration between OCP Group and the EBRD is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships in advancing sustainable development. By addressing water scarcity and ensuring uninterrupted fertiliser production, OCP Group is directly contributing to global food security at a time when agricultural resources are under increasing pressure. The group’s initiatives not only enhance its global leadership position but also set a benchmark for industrial sustainability. From supporting local communities with improved water access to driving technological advancements in desalination, OCP is paving the way for a greener. In addition more secure future for Morocco and beyond. Moreover, this collaboration serves as an inspiring model for other industries, proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
