Iron is a metal with an atomic number 26 and the chemical symbol Fe. It is primarily
extracted from the mineral hematite, which contains about 70% of it. this mineral appears as a
heavy, greyish-silver metal that is hard and tensile, and known for its high specific
gravity of 7.87 and magnetic properties.
Previously, iron has been used since ancient times known as the Iron Age and marked
a significant technological advancement, allowing humans to create tools and weapons
that were stronger than those made from bronze.
Today, iron serves several specialities. It is primarily used in the production of steel,
construction and infrastructure, where steel is a mixture of iron and carbon, that
provides strength and durability. Additionally, it is also used in manufacturing tools, machinery,
and vehicles.
In Africa, several countries are rich in iron deposits such as Nigeria, Egypt,
Mozambique and Zambia with South Africa being the highest producer of this mineral of the
continent.
