Mauritania

Mauritania’s mining sector is primarily driven by Iron Ore mining and beneficiation. Beyond Irone, the country produces a variety of other minerals including Gold, Copper, Gypsum, Petroleum, Steel, and Salt. The Ministry of Mines and Industry oversees the sector, with specific departments promoting mining, managing petroleum development, and evaluating mineral exploration. The Societe National Industrielle et Miniere (SNIM) leads Iron Ore production and beneficiation. In spite of challenges, including fluctuating commodity prices and operational issues, Mauritania’s mining sector remains vital, contributing significantly to the national economy and export earnings.

Mauritania in recent years have grown in mineral production, with notable rises in Cement, Gypsum, Iron Ore, Salt, and Crude Steel production. Moreover, in 2007, Mauritania’s mineral exports were valued at approximately $1.5 billion, notably, Iron Ore exports accounted for around 38% of this total, valued at $575 million, while Crude Oil exports made up 23% at $339 million The mining sector, contributing around 12% to the GDP and more than half of export earnings in 2005, remains a cornerstone of Mauritania’s economy.
