Morocco’s Gas and Renewable Energy Attracting International Investors

Due to its large, untapped potential in the gas and renewable energy sectors, Morocco has become an important destination for international investors. In fact, the CEO of Sound Energy, Graham Lyon, pointed out this during a recent interview with Attaqa his company’s growing interest in Morocco’s gas industry. He added that Morocco’s wealth in natural resources and the government’s supportive policies make it an ideal location for energy exploration.

Exploring Sound Energy’s Projects in Morocco

Owning stakes in several projects across the country, the British company Sound Energy is deeply active in Morocco’s energy landscape. One of its main ventures are Tendrara production Concession. This venture has been active since September 2018, and it is set to run for 25 years. Sound Energy also holds exploration assets in Greater Tendrara, Anoual, and Sidi Mokhtar. These sites hold promise for additional discoveries, which will eventually enrich Morocco’s energy portfolio.

The Key Projects are:

  • Tendrara Production Concession: It’s a long-term project focused on discovering and extracting natural gas.
  • Greater Tendrara, Anoual, and Sidi Mokhtar: These are still exploration sites with existing discoveries and potential for more resources.

So far, Sound Energy has invested more than $168 million in Morocco. Moreover, it plans to continue expanding its operations. Lyon Emphasised that Morocco remains their primary focus. He added that the country’s favourable conditions for local gas supply and competitive pricing.

Future Prospects for Morocco’s Gas and Energy Market

Even though large-scale gas discoveries are not confirmed yet, the potential remains high. Lyon said: “I cannot say that the potential is limited until all the basins are fully explored”, claiming that he is fully aware that fully exploring all basins is necessary before determining limits on resource availability. Morocco sets high standards for its gas market as it continues to invest in renewable energies. Thus balancing traditional energy sources with sustainable alternatives.

Furthermore, the key developments include the deal with Managem. Since last December 2024, Sound Energy sold part of its Moroccan gas assets to Managem, a Moroccan mining company. Additionally, and most importantly, by the end of 2025, Morocco aims to enter the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) production market, with trials starting next summer and commercial production expected to reach 10 million cubic feet daily by late autumn.
